This is a recent discussion report from a Policy Eye Roundtable on Supporting the Northern Ireland Electricity Grid and System held in November 2025, in Belfast. EAI were represented by CEO, Dara Lynott, at the roundtable and are very supportive of the series of discussions as they support greater communication, understanding and collaboration on the vision of a decarbonised electricity system for Northern Ireland.
The report highlights that while the region has strong renewable potential, its main challenge is integrating supply with demand. Participants stressed that despite growing renewable capacity, electricity demand is falling, driving higher costs, increased levels of dispatch down, and reduced investor confidence. Demand growth through electrification (e.g. heat, transport, and data centres) is noted as critical, aligning with EAI Strategy Papers.
