This paper examines the impact of interconnection on the SEM, focussing on its implication for security
of supply, system costs, dispatch down, and market coupling. It highlights the need for a recalibrated
approach to interconnection planning – one that realistically reflects Ireland’s unique electricity
market. The prioritisation of electricity imports over indigenous renewable generation is a significant
concern that needs to be addressed. A strategic and measured approach to interconnection is
therefore essential to ensure it contributes positively to Ireland’s electricity system resilience.
